| Yahoo! | This isn't a search engine but a directory. It is still the best place to have your site listed. However, it can be a frustrating process. If you have your own domain you shouldn't have a problem. But if you have a free site it can be difficult. You need to be sure to submit it to the right category(sub-category) and you should NEVER submit it until it is at least 90% complete. It should also be noted that if you do a search on Yahoo! and your page comes up, that doesn't mean it is listed in Yahoo. If it comes up under webpage matches and not Site matches then you aren't in the directory. If you aren't sure look in the upper left corner. If it says "Search results by Inktomi" by the Yahoo logo then you aren't listed. If your site is listed you will be able to find it under the category you submitted it to (unless they placed it in a more appropiate category. |
| Alta Vista will add your site within a day or two of submission. Alta Vista can provide you with quite a few hits if your site comes out in the top 40 or so for a fairly common search term. Alta Vista is abused by spammers though. For example, you might do a search for "gifs" and see a lot of adult sites near the top. | |
